Hello everyone, welcome back to this podcast.
- 0:13
This time, I want to share a funny experience from my students who live in
- 0:19
Indonesia.
Indonesia.
- 0:20
Almost all of them experience what we call culture shock.
- 0:31
Jujur, cerita mereka sering banget bikin saya senyum sendiri.
Honestly, their stories often make me smile to myself.
- 0:36
Pertama, soal orang Indonesia yang ramah.
First, about how friendly Indonesians are.
- 0:40
Kita memang dikenal ramah, tapi kadang terlalu ramah.
We are indeed known for our friendliness, but sometimes it can be a bit too much.
- 0:46
Some of my students were shocked when people they just met asked questions like,
- 0:53
Umur berapa?
How old are you?
- 0:55
Sudah menikah?
Are you married?
- 0:57
For Indonesians, these questions are often seen as small talk.
- 1:04
But for some foreigners, it can feel really personal, right?
- 1:10
Kenapa mereka tanya gitu, padahal baru kenal 5 menit?
Why are they asking that when they just met you 5 minutes ago?
- 1:17
Kedua, soal toilet.
Second, about toilets.
- 1:19
Ini klasik.
This is a classic.
- 1:21
In big malls, there might be dry sitting toilets like in your country.
- 1:27
But in many other places, especially in big cities, there are squat toilets and the floors can be wet.
- 1:37
Bahkan kamu cuma pakai air, nggak ada tisu.
Sometimes you only use water, no toilet paper.
- 1:41
Ketiga, tentang makanan.
Third, about food.
- 1:45
Level pedas di Indonesia itu serius.
The spice level in Indonesia is serious.
- 1:49
Beberapa murid saya bilang, aku suka pedas.
Some of my students say, I love spicy food.
- 1:53
Tapi, waktu coba makanan pedas Indonesia, uff, wajahnya langsung merah dan nggak berhenti minum.
But when they try Indonesian spicy dishes, uff, their faces turn red and they can't stop drinking.
- 2:03
So, what you call spicy might still be mild for Indonesians.
- 2:12
Hati-hati ya, kalau pesan makanan.
Be careful when ordering food.
- 2:15
Belum tentu pedasnya sesuai standarmu.
The spice level might not match your standards.
- 2:19
Keempat, Indonesia punya banyak aksen dan dialek.
Fourth, Indonesia has many accents and dialects.
- 2:24
Cara ngomongnya bisa beda-beda, tergantung lokasi.
The way people speak can vary depending on the location.
- 2:27
Sometimes, one word can sound positive in one place.
- 2:32
But in another place, the same word can have a negative connotation.
- 2:38
Kalau kamu nggak yakin, lebih baik tanya.
If you're not sure, it's better to ask.
- 2:42
Nggak masalah kalau kamu banyak tanya.
It's totally fine to ask a lot of questions.
- 2:46
Saya selalu bilang ke murid-murid saya, jangan takut salah.
I always tell my students, don't be afraid to make mistakes.
- 2:50
Karena orang Indonesia itu apresiatif banget.
Because Indonesians are very appreciative.
- 2:54
For example, if you can only say how are you or thank you, Indonesians will smile widely.
- 3:03
Apalagi kalau kamu banyak tanya.
Especially if you ask a lot of questions.
- 3:07
Kelima dan terakhir, hampir setiap bule punya momen tiba-tiba jadi selebriti.
Fifth and finally, almost every foreigner has a moment where they suddenly become a celebrity.
- 3:15
Terutama kalau tinggal di luar destinasi populer.
Especially if they live outside popular tourist destinations.
- 3:18
Tiba-tiba ada yang minta foto.
Suddenly someone asks for a photo.
- 3:22
Satu orang jadi dua orang.
One person turns into two.
- 3:24
Dua orang jadi satu keluarga.
Two people turn into a whole family.
- 3:27
Sometimes it's a big group and you're the only foreigner there.
- 3:33
Selebriti kan?
A celebrity, right?
- 3:34
Awalnya kamu pasti kaget.
At first, you’ll definitely be surprised.
- 3:37
Tapi lama-lama jadi cerita lucu yang nggak terlupakan.
But over time, it becomes a funny story you won't forget.
- 3:42
Gimana sama kamu?
How about you?
- 3:43
Have you ever experienced culture shock in Indonesia or another country?
- 3:49
Oke, sampai disini dulu ya untuk episode 3.
Alright, that's it for episode 3.
- 3:54
Sampai ketemu di episode depan.
